Fall Colors & Cozy Play

Jumping in a pile of leaves is a no brainer, but there are plenty of other crisp-weather activities and crafts for the littles. Check them out below.

Leaf Crafts

Explore the vibrant colors of autumn with simple leaf projects perfect for tiny hands. Collect some real leaves, make your own or grab some craft leaves or leaf stickers. Have your kiddos trace them, sort them into colors or shapes or make a collage on a large sheet of craft paper or butcher paper. You can find a free tree/leaf printable here.

Outdoor Fall I Spy Hunt

Get outdoors and explore the wonder of Fall!  Simply print this free Outdoor Fall I Spy Hunt check list (laminate if you want to reuse it), grab a marker and take your kiddo(s) outside on a cool crisp late summer/early fall day to try to spy the items on the list, including fun Halloween items. Some items could be collected for crafts (like pine cones & acorns), so take along a bag to carry them!

Comparing Weights with Balance Scale-Fall

My grandson loves weighing and comparing items with this balance scale.  He quickly understood that the lighter items go up and the heavier item goes down. If your child likes to record data, you can use this free printable. For fall, you can use the same items from the Spooky Scavenger Hunt Activity, or add some others like acorns, pinecones, etc.

Fall Activities

Halloween Themed Pattern
Spooky Scavenger Hunt

This one may require a trip to the Dollar store in September/October, or digging through your Halloween/Fall craft/decorations. Simply hide some items around your house, write down what you hid and give your child direction on where to look and how many of each item to find. Make sure the items & hiding spots are age appropriate. For older kiddos, you can give them your list with checkboxes or even turn out the lights and give them a flashlight. For the littles, just direct them around verbally. Mamaw got glow in the dark ping pong eyeballs and  craft leaves from Amazon, and bones, spiders, centipedes and mini pumpkins from the Dollar store. She hid multiples of all of them, so it could also provide counting practice.

Fall Measuring Practice

Grab a ruler and measuring tape and head outside to get some measuring practice! Take along a bag so you can collect the biggest of these fall items: orange leaf, yellow leaf, green leaf, pinecone, acorn, etc.. Happy hunting!

Autumn Harvest Basket
Quick Fall Printables

If you just want a quick printable to keep your kiddo busy for a few minutes, download these, grab a few other simple supplies, and you are good to go. These would also be great to have ready for the wiggly children at your Thanksgiving table!

Spider Web Cookie
Fall Sensory Bin

You can use the same items from the Spooky Scavenger Hunt Activity, but hide them in a bin of dirt, sand, rice, uncooked pasta or water (add food coloring and/or cooked spaghetti to make it spooky). Give your kiddo some tools  or household items, like large spoons or handheld strainers to find them all. If you have a light table, turn off the room lights and make it extra spooky!

Bright Autumn Leaf
Active Play with Leaves

Besides the obvious rake, jump, repeat fun that comes with fall, here are some other ways to use real leaves or fall maple craft leaves for autumn fun.

  • Scatter leaves on a table and have your kiddos try to blow them all off into plastic pumpkins or buckets. Set a timer to see how long it takes.

  • Scatter leaves on the floor and have the kids sweep or rake them into a bucket. Use fun objects like skull hands or witch brooms from the Dollar store as tools.

  • Scatter some leaves near a closed door that has an opening between it and the floor. Have the kids use straws to try to blow them under the door.

  • Hide 10 leaves and have your kiddo try to find them in a few minutes. Set a fun timer!
